    • The longest I've ever had the same car

By EddieAllen on Friday, October 18, 2019

      4.0
I got this car used when it had 52,900 miles. I got the frost metallic silver color, and the car was in beautiful condition when I got it. I got this car in June 2018 and it's now October 2019, so I've had it for a little over a year. It's got a great interior, comfortable seats, and is very good for tall people (I'm 6'2.") It has great legroom in the back as well and have never had a complaint from people in the back. The only thing I've ever had to do was oil changes, and I've never had the check engine light come on (knock on wood.) My main complaint is that the 2.5 is slow, the cvt does a good job of handling the power, however, it lags sometimes. I'll put the pedal down, and sometimes it takes a few seconds for the transmission to do anything. The car is responsive, but I wouldn't call it fun to drive. It always feels secure tho, as a Subaru should. Reviewers have said the car looks boring, but I love the look of it. It's aging like fine wine. If you're in the market for an AWD sedan, I'd give this car a look.
    • Switched from a 2012 Toyota Camry to 2017 Legacy

I owned a 2012 Carmy for almost 5 years. I drive almost 110 miles a day to and from work. I have owned at least 50 cars in search of the perfect car. I now realize there is no such thing... but the Carmy was the closet I have ever came to the best practical car I have ever owned. Tires and gas are the only thing I have ever needed on the Carmy. I was getting almost 32-34 miles per gal. and was totally happy. I changed the oil religiously and never had a problem. I decided to sell my pickup because I never drove it and get a car with good gas mileage, safety, reliability, and all wheel drive. I can be honest there was not much out there. The Legacy was the only 4 door sedan to fit this bill. There were some crossovers that met this criteria but we already have a CRV so I went for the Legacy sedan. I sold my Carmy for 7500 and paid 17500 for a 2017 Legacy with 24,000 miles. Now for the differences I noticed. The Carmy had a lot more pep with the 4cyl compared to the boxster engine in the Legacy. You hit the gas and it makes noise and eventually in its own sweet time it would get you there. I have my reservations about passing tractors on country roads. The Carmy wins in this area. The ride and seats are much more comfortable in the Carmy, The body is more stylish than the Legacy. But I have no regrets, I feel much safer with the Legacy, It goes like a tank in the snow, 31 miles per gallon, and reliability is comprisable thus far. Bottom line I am happy with my decision... But if Carmy comes out with an all wheel drive model I may have to rethink things all over again.
    • This car is very safe, never stuck in snow

What sets apart this car from the rest is the value. Nissan offers an AWD on their Altima now, sure, but the tried and true AWD system Subaru offers is fantastic. Ford's Fusion AWD sport was in a totally different segment than this car, and is now being discontinued. Nissan's Altima is not as safe and the ride isn't as good. Every time I drive in the snow I feel very confident and relaxed. I'm also very impressed by the Legacy/Outback small offset IIHS performace, especially on the passenger side. It's very reassuring that my passengers will be as safe as I am. Kudos to Subaru to really having the safety scores to back up its reputation as a safe car manufacturer. It's one of the safer cars on the road at this price point, earning a top safety pick+ from IIHS. Regardless of the AWD, it is cleverly distributed so that fuel economy is always prioritized. It only kicks into the rear wheels when traction is lost in the front, but compared to say, Honda's REALTIME AWD system, the response is much faster because the rear differential is always engaged, no matter how little power is being sent to the rear under normal driving conditions, the performance in the Legacy is instentaneous, whilst other systems feel laggy. I have had a bit of understeer/wheel slip while pulling onto a main road in rainy conditions. The power is instantly transferred to the rear by the center differential, due to brake vectoring. Aside from that, the ride is incredibly comfortable, quiet, and composed. The position of the engine (very far fowards) could cause understeer under hard cornering, but this would be mitigated with driver skill. This car handles reasonably well for a cushiony midsize sedan, with a little bit of body roll and vague steering feel. For a daily driver, this is perfect acceptable. The CVT is very well engineered, performing like the older automatic I was driving earlier on. The simulated shift points, which can be activated any time using the paddle shifters, which gives confidence while passing at 35-45 mph speeds. Where this car can feel incompetent is during highway passing, where it can take a few seconds to increase speed by another 10 mph. However, at this price point, and these power figures, that is to be expected with the base 2.5 liter engine. Hence, I am giving it a 4/5 on the performance, but considering that I get 30 mpg in real time and drive in the city quite often, this factor balances out. This engine is tuned for fuel economy, not performance. I also feel like giving it a 5/5 for styling because that is rather subjective. The car's interior is very ergonomical and practical. Supremely comfortable. My friends absolutely love riding in the car with me, which makes sense, considering it has the most interior space in its class. The interior is very well insulated, with sound-deadening foam in the firewall, wheel arches, and behind the passenger seats in rear. The backseat is a great place to be in this car. Also, comes standard with Apple CarPlay, a fantastic perk. The base model infotainment camera can be glitchy at times, and the car's base model doesn't have many configurability settings. Very standard, basic stuff. No sport mode or anything like that, although I would argue that economy car daily drivers such as these don't really need that. It comes standard with paddle shifters, which although they use fake CVT shift points, are a huge improvement over CVT vehicles without such an option. The simulated shift points really do a great job mimicking You should get this car if you want a very safe, reliable, extremely comfortable cruiser sedan that also cannot get stuck in snow. Sometimes I see someone with a Honda Accord and feel a hint of jealousy, knowing that their car is sportier and more refined than mine, but not for long. As soon as wintertime comes along, this car comes into its forte. So many sedans are stuck all over the place, where as I feel like I'm driving a snowplow. 2019 models will come with Subaru's eyesight as standard. If you value driving performance above all else, get a Honda Accord or Mazda 6. If you want to keep your sedan for 20 years, get a Toyota Camry. If you want to never get stuck in the snow and be safe, get the Subaru Legacy. I genuinely love this car. Sure, I've only ever owned a 2005 Toyota Camry, so my bar isn't set as high as car journalists, who herald the Honda Accord as being very well rounded. But I am genuinely happy with my purchase.
